Great news for fans of the Jeep Cherokee. The 2019 Jeep Cherokee has received the highest honor from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) being named one of their Top Safety Picks. Already named the Most American Vehicle back-to-back years by Cars.com, this is just another award for one of the stellar choices for drivers looking into new Jeep vehicles. This year the IIHS has awarded the 2019 Jeep Cherokee with a Top Safety Pick rating, the highest the current KL-generation model has performed since receiving the same rating upon its debut for the 2014 model year. This also marks the first time Jeep has earned the designation on any vehicle it sells since the 2017 Jeep Compass.

“Earlier Cherokee models earned only a marginal rating in the driver-side small overlap front test and were never evaluated in the passenger-side test. Jeep improved the 2019 model with better A-pillars, front door hinges, door sills, and driver’s seat belt “to provide better protection in moderate and small overlap crashes.” According to the IIHS.

How the Jeep Cherokee Faired In Testing

Drivers that want to gain the exact model tested and awarded should opt for a 2019 Cherokee equipped with front crash prevention technology and high-beam assist on the LED projector headlights, both options. This is the vehicle that earned “good” ratings on all six crashworthiness tests. Good is the highest rating a vehicle can earn. The 2019 Jeep Cherokee was tested in both drive-side and passenger-side front small overlap crashes, which produce frontal crashes where a vehicle hits a stationary object. Previous models scored “marginal” ratings on this testing. How did Jeep revisit this problem? Jeep engineers touched up the vehicle to embrace the high-strength steel on the Cherokee’s A-pillars, front door-hinge pillars and door sills. Added reinforcements made for greater driver seat belts.

Improved Braking + Headlamps

The IIHS gave its highest rating to the optional automatic emergency braking system, known as the Forward Collision Warning-Plus feature. This remarkable feature includes sensor-fusion technology mixing camera enhanced with radar to tell if an impact is imminent. This system actually helped the 2019 Cherokee escape from two crashes in simulations of both 12 and 25 mph speeds. The IIHS is famous for inspecting all areas vital to safety, including the headlights. The 2019 Cherokee carries the choice of available high-beam assist, providing standard LED headlamps and the feature that automatically toggles between high and low-beam lighting depending on whether other vehicles are present. Jeep has noted that over 80 available safety features have carried over into the latest Cherokee, the 2020 Jeep Cherokee.
