SUVs have received a better reputation for delivering better mpg ratings more so today than in years past. Earlier this year, a report from Mopar Insiders revealed a mild-hybrid version of the upcoming 2021 Dodge Durango. Providing better engines for the Durango should help the three-row SUV maintain its strong run. According to sources from Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA),  the expectation will be to include the Pentastar 3.6-Liter with eTorque engine as the base powertrain for the 2021 Durango. The current Durango’s base engine is the non-hybrid version that nets owners 293 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque in SXT trim. The V6 hybrid powertrain is offered in the Ram 1500 making 305 horsepower and 269 lb-ft of torque. What else does Dodge have planned for the Durango under its hood?

Optional Powertrain Choices For Customers

Dodge will build three other engine options to join the 2021 Durango along with the Pentastar. The next upgradeable powertrain is their trusted 5.7-Liter HEMI V8 that comes standard on the Durango RT with two options, the base HEMI and the eTorque option as well. This is the same set up in the ever-popular Ram 1500, another Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) brand. For drivers looking to have a more impressive horsepower output, the Durango’s V8 produces 360 horsepower and 390 lb-ft., which isn’t too far off from the Ram 1500 that hits 395 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque. The final option for drivers to opt for is the top-tier 6.4-Liter HEMI V8 that is only available for the Durango SRT trim. The Street Racing Technology found in the Durango has helped make it the fastest three-row SUV on the market today. Of course, there’s reason to believe that title will belong to a future Durango not yet in production.

Durango SRT Hellcat To Be Made?

Could there really be a Hellcat SUV? Strong rumors persist regarding a future Durango SRT Hellcat to come in 2021. Dodge has already made a Hellcat Durango as a part of their law enforcement-only model, the Dodge Durango Pursuit. The police have access to the full power of a 797-horsepower engine that is all thanks to the Hellcat Redeye engine placed inside. Those at Road & Track saw firsthand a Hellcat badge on a Durango in a now-removed trailer for the newest “Fast & Furious” film. This has many wondering if art is imitating life or if life is imitating art. Mopar Insiders have the Durango SRT Hellcat slotted to be a toned-down version that will supply a sturdy 707 horsepower and 645 lb-ft of torque.

This is the same amount of horsepower found in the Hellcat when it debuted several years ago in the Dodge Challenger. Either way, we’re assured to see the Dodge Durango gain the power of the Hellcat that has variations in both the Challenger and Charger muscle cars. This may be a special-edition Durango, but we shall see what the future holds down the road.
