Some comparisons between pickups are fair and others are not exactly warranted. We’d like to put to rest the notion that Ram is second behind any brand as far as pickups. Only Ford can really lay claim to being a rival of the brand. Certainly, the 2021 Ram 1500 is a stand alone in the pickup segment, but for a measure of good faith, we have results from a test that pitted the most popular Ram pickup against the Toyota Tundra of the same 2021 model year face off. In a contest to determine each vehicle’s MPG towing range, we found out just how far ahead Ram is.

The Fast Lane is responsible for coming up with a faceoff between the new 2021 Ram 1500 and the 2021 Toyota Tundra. The trim of the Ram 1500 is the new TRX Rebel, a trim that supplies owners with exceptional off-road abilities and strength. Just how much stronger is the TRX versus the Tundra? Consider the horsepower rating between each truck. Ram offers 702 horsepower thanks to its Supercharged 6.2-Liter HEMI V8 engine. An impressive powertrain that is housed in an exceptional interior, owners get a lot to appreciate and enjoy.

Testing the Ram 1500 TRX Rebel Vs the Toyota Tundra

The 2021 Toyota Tundra on the other hand offers 381 horsepower (a mark just about half the amount of horsepower offered with the Ram 1500 TRX Rebel). The testing distance ran 66 miles while towing 8,000 pounds (3,629 kilograms) in tow. The total package comprised of a flat-decked trailer and a 1998 Chevrolet K1500 four-paw-drive pickup. This was ironic as Ram has pulled ahead of Chevrolet for quite some time.

This load is close to the official towing capacities of the TRX and Tundra, both are capable of going slightly over 8,000 pounds. Despite offering less MPG economy, the Toyota Tundra barely edged out the most robust half-ton Ram 1500 pickup. The Tundra marked its travel at a rate of 10.1 mpg (23.3 l/100 km) on the clock and 11 mpg (21.4 /100 km) on the handheld calculator. Regarding the travel of the TRX Rebel, the Ram product finished the MPG towing test with 8.9 mpg (26.4 l/100 km) on the clock and 10 mpg (23.5 /100 km) on the calculator.

Notes and Differences

Keep in mind, the Tundra ran on 87-octane regular fuel versus the 91-octane premium fuel added to the TRX Rebel as every single SRT model needs better fuel. Despite offering just a lone 1 mpg difference, the Tundra is noticeably louder in the cabin while pulling on the highway at 70 miles per hour at 69 decibels compared to 67 decibels for the 2021 Ram 1500 TRX Rebel.
