How the Chrysler Pacifica Put Life Back into the Minivan Segment for FCA
Demand fades for vehicles over time, as Fiat Chrysler Automotives (FCA) saw with their long-running minivan the Chrysler Town & Country. In 2014, at the peak of its run, the Town & Country sold over 146,984 vehicles in North America. However, the shelf-life is only as good as the speed at which new features and benefits can be added, and the Town & Country only sold 61,891 vehicles just two years later in all of North America. Luckily, for Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA), the auto group that encompasses Chrysler and many other brands, their forward thinking and innovation continued. The idea to not stop producing quality products didn’t end with the formerly popular Town & Country.
Enter the Chrysler Pacifica
The Chrysler Pacifica and the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid were added to the Chrysler lineup in 2017. Chrysler has only two models being sold currently, the Chrysler 300 and Chrysler Pacifica with the Pacifica Hybrid as an option for Pacifica customers. The decision to create the first hybrid in its segment was a daring decision that has paid off. The first hybrid minivan ever made in the United States was made by Chrysler and has quickly changed the game with the release of their new flagship Pacifica plug-in hybrid winning Cars.com “Family Vehicle of the Year” back to back years in 2017 and 2018.
Winning awards came easily for the Pacifica due to having so many perks. The Pacifica has 32.3 cubic-feet of storage in the trunk, 87.5 cubic-feet of cargo space when the third-row seats are folded down, and when the second- and third-row seats are folded down, there’s 140.5 cubic-feet of cargo space. When the seats are not stowed away in their under-floor Stow ‘n Go compartments, there’s ample storage space left for small items. The Pacifica Hybrid does not offer the second-row Stow ‘n Go storage seats because the space that space is used to store the vehicle’s battery. The third-row Stow ‘n Go seats do fold down though, allowing for greater storage capacity.
