The 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee – A Boundless Beast

Because you don’t fix what isn’t broken, the 2015 model year brought about only the slightest refresh for the Jeep Grand Cherokee. Notable enhancements are the increased power from the performance-driven SRT, along with a quieter high-end Summit.

The beauty of the Jeep Grand Cherokee is its commitment to rugged capability combined with refined comfort and luxurious upgrades. In other words, you needn’t sacrifice performance for comfort or vice-versa. The Jeep Grand Cherokee has it all – in spades.

The Brass Tacks of the 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Able to accommodate five passengers, the 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee is available in six trim levels, starting with the Laredo, and moving up to the Altitude, Limited, Overland, Summit, and the high-performance SRT.

You can opt for the rear-wheel or four-wheel drive in any of them, with the exception of the SRT, exclusively configured with four-wheel drive.

Even though it’s the standard model, the Laredo has plenty to offer in the form of:

  • cruise control
  • automatic headlights
  • foglights
  • power accessories
  • tilt-and-telescoping leather-wrapped steering wheel
  • keyless entry and ignition
  • dual-zone air conditioning
  • Bluetooth connectivity for audio and phone
  • CD player
  • six-speaker sound system and five-inch touchscreen
  • all ready for action on 17-inch alloy wheels.

With available packages, like the 23E, you can add an eight-way power driver seat, roof rails, and satellite radio.

The Security and Convenience Group equips the Laredo with remote engine start, a power liftgate, heated front seats, which come complemented by a heated steering wheel, along with a 115-volt outlet.

If you choose the four-wheel drive configuration on the Laredo, you can add a two-speed transfer case, skid plates, hill descent control, on-off road tires, a full-size spare tire, and a Selec-Terrain system, courtesy of the Off-Road Adventure I Group.

As with other trim levels, there are stand-alone options available to better equip your chosen Grand Cherokee, like a sunroof or larger 8.4-inch touchscreen with UConnect, HD radio, and voice-activated controls.

Take the Laredo with the 23E Package, along with the Security and Convenience Group, and add details like 20-inch gloss black wheels, chrome exhaust outlets, black suede interior, and body-color grille, and you’re looking at the Altitude.

Stepping up to the Limited, you’ll get all the best of the Limited, along with:

  • remote start
  • leather interior
  • driver memory settings
  • cargo cover
  • 18-inch wheels
  • rearview camera
  • USB charging ports in the back cabin
  • nine-speaker sound system
  • chrome exterior trim details
  • anti-theft system
  • parking sensors.

Much like the Laredo, the Limited can be further fancied up with available packages like the Off-Road Adventure I and II Groups, which get you an air suspension system, and a locking rear differential, respectively.

Or the Luxury Group II, which is a study in ultimate convenience, really, between the automatic high-beams, automatic wipers, xenon headlights, premium leather interior, power tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, ventilated front seats, and a panoramic sunroof.

Approaching the top of the line, the Overland trim level comes with the Limited’s bells and whistles, including the Luxury Group II features, in addition to a towing package:

  • automatic wipers
  • power-folding mirrors
  • steering wheel with wooden trim
  • 20-inch wheels
  • 8.4-inch touchscreen with navigation.

Both the Limited and the Overland are eligible for the Advanced Technology Group, featuring forward collision warning, supported by crash mitigation, adaptive cruise control, rear cross-path detection, and blind spot monitoring.

At the pinnacle of the 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee lineup sits the Summit, distinguished by its illuminated door sills, new noise-canceling features, parking sensors up front, acoustic windshield, actual wood trim, 19-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, and polished 20-inch wheels. The Advanced Technology Group comes standard as well; however, the Summit can be enhanced by the Platinum Series, which really is all about the exterior.

Not unlike the Summit with few exceptions like the sound system and sunroof, the SRT boasts its own V8 engine, along with LED running lights, performance-tuned steering to match its performance tires wrapped around 20-inch forged wheels, adaptive suspension, Brembo brakes, carbon-fiber accents throughout the cabin, limited-slip rear differential, as well as leather and suede sport seats.

The Red Vapor package gives the SRT an even edgier appearance thanks to black, red, and silver interior accents within the cabin, black chrome wheels, and gloss black exterior accents.

Of course, with each trim level, you have another choice to consider with respect to exterior color. The 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee palette consists of nine shades including Billet Silver Metallic Clearcoat, Black Forest Green Pearlcoat, Bright White Clearcoat, Brilliant Black Crystal Pearlcoat, Cashmere Pearlcoat, Deep Cherry Red Crystal Pearlcoat, Granite Crystal Metallic Clearcoat, Maximum Steel Metallic Clearcoat, and True Blue Pearlcoat.

Powering Up in the 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Standard fare for all 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee models comes from the 3.6-liter V6 engine, rated at 290 horsepower and 260 lb.-ft. of torque. With the exception of the Laredo, all other Jeep Grand Cherokee trims can be equipped with the available 5.7-liter V8 engine, rated at 360 horsepower and 390 lb.-ft. of torque or the turbocharged 3.0-liter V6, able to produce 240 horsepower and 420 lb.-ft. of torque.

Again, the SRT is exclusively matched to the 6.4-liter V8, which generates a monstrous 475 horsepower and 470 lb.-ft. of torque.

All 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokees feature standard operation from the eight-speed automatic transmission.

Fuel Economy in the 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee

If you choose the 3.6-liter V6 configuration, expect EPA estimates of 17 city, 24 highway, and 19 mpg combined when paired to the four-wheel drive setup, and 17 city, 25 highway, and 20 mpg combined from the rear-wheel drive.

Edmunds performance testing clocked the Grand Cherokee Overland with V6 engine and four-wheel drive at 7.9 seconds in the zero to sixty mph test. That’s pretty quick for the segment, and so equipped, the Overland offers competitive towing, with its maximum capacity rated at 6,200 pounds.

Opting for the available V8 will return EPA estimates of 14 city, 20 highway, 16 mpg combined in four-wheel drive, and 14 city, 22 highway, or 17 mpg combined when configured with two-wheel drive. With this equipment, the Grand Cherokee offers a maximum towing limit of 7,400 pounds.

Improved fuel efficiency is supported by the diesel V6 engine, which, with four-wheel drive, gets 21 city, 28 highway, 24 mpg combined, while the rear-wheel drive returns 22 city, 30 highway, and 25 mpg combined. Towing capacity matches the V8, but the zero to sixty time is a hair quicker at 7.7 seconds.

Now, given that the SRT is performance-oriented, the fuel economy drops significantly at 13 city, 19 highway, and 15 mpg combined. However, if you’re in the market for the SRT, you’re likely not concerned with fuel efficiency as a primary priority.

The 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee is Strong and Safe

With its wealth of standard safety features like hill ascent and descent control, antilock brakes, and stability and traction control, along with all the available technology groups and security packages, the 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee boasts strong safety reviews from both government crash tests and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

Earning all five of the five possible stars from federal safety tests, the Grand Cherokee was also awarded the highest possible rating of “Good” from the IIHS.

If you choose to lease a Jeep Grand Cherokee, you’ll afford yourself the confidence and peace of mind that you’re driving a rock-solid vehicle with respect to reliability and safety. Increasingly, more consumers are looking to the Jeep Grand Cherokee for their family cars, due in no small part to its dependable equipment and proven performance record.

Of course, pricing will fluctuate based on trim level and options, but the starting MSRP for the 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee is listed at $29,995.
