Stellantis Adding First U.S. EV Battery Plant
Stellantis has joined forces with Samsung SDI after investing upwards of $3 billion towards a state-of-the-art battery plant in Kokomo, Indiana, which has long built transmissions and engines found in many Jeep, Ram, Dodge and Chrysler models.
Mark Stewart, CEO of Stellantis, remarked about the joint venture, offering praise for adding 1,400 jobs around Kokomo where Stellantis, the company created by the merger of Fiat Chrysler and PSA Group, is based. Altogether, there are new priorities to build four separate engine and transmission plants that will offer more than 6,000 hourly and salaried careers.

Yoonho Choi, CEO of Samsung SDI, added Stellantis, various officials from the City of Kokomo and State of Indiana helped steer the way for the monument investment for the company’s first battery plant in the United States, aiming to be ready by 2025.
“We have secured a solid foothold in a rapidly growing North American EV market through the joint venture with Stellantis. We will make sincere efforts to bring satisfaction to the market with top-class quality products in the future, and we will contribute towards meeting the climate change target,” Choi said.
The Kokomo plant plans to have an anticipated annual production capacity of 23 gigawatt-hours, with a goal to increase to 33 GWh in the next few years. An expected total capacity would also increase as far as demand takes this aspect of EV capabilities. Pushing the barrier further for Stellantis electric vehicles is a possibility.
