Powerful Looks

Dodge has always had a reputation for designing bold and powerful looking vehicles. With the numerous redesigns the Charger has gone through, it’s nice to see that the concept remains the same. This is perhaps the most muscular looking performance sedan on the market, and one of the few remaining ones that pay homage to the old-school muscle cars from the good old days. Has it changed much since the last redesign in 2015? No, but why mess with perfection?

It all starts in the front, which is compact and aggressive looking. The headlights are slimmed down to match the cross-hair grille, and when the running lights and LED headlight accent lights are thrown on, it really stands out in a crowd. The compact front end gives way to a large and sweeping hood, which bulges upwards in the center with valleys on each side. The result is a hood that’s both muscular and aerodynamic, with plenty of eye-catching definition.

Above the front wheels, the Charger has muscular shoulders. But past that, the side is chiseled-out from the back to the rear-end for aerodynamic and design purposes. The chiseled-out slab leaves two muscular and hard character lines that run from the front fenders backwards.

The back of the Charger is also impressive, and features a racetrack taillamp made from LED bulbs that’s sure to leave a lasting impression on anyone who gets stuck behind it. Dual port exhaust, and mean looking taillights put the final touches on a sleek, muscular, and aggressive looking muscle-sedan.

Powerful and Efficient Engines

The Charger has four engine options: the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6, 5.7-liter Hemi V8, 6.4-liter Hemi V8, and Supercharged 6.2-liter HEMI SRT Hellcat V8 Engine.

The 3.6-liter is an award-winning engine that’s famous for its refinement and compact/lightweight design. It has plenty of power and efficiency-enhancing technology, such as dual overhead camshafts, high-flow intake with exhaust ports, and variable valve timing resulting in 292 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. Or, 300 horsepower with the Rallye Group option. Regardless of the horsepower, the base SE and SXT trims are still able to net up to 31 mpg highway. That blend of horsepower, torque, and fuel mileage is one of the most balanced and powerful options for a base-trim sedan — just take a look at some of the other ones out there right now.

The 5.7-liter HEMI V8 engine is the continuation of a legend. Nostalgic muscle-car enthusiasts and new ones alike will appreciate this engine’s combination of power and efficiency. While it’s not the perfect blend like the V6, 25 mpg highway from 370 horsepower and 395 lb-ft of torque is still an impressive feat.

As the trim level goes up, so does the availability of these engines. Therefore, it’s no surprise that the standard engine on the Charger R/T Scat Pack and SRT models is the 6.4-liter HEMI V8 engine. This is the second most powerful engine in the Charger lineup, and delivers a heart-pounding 485 horsepower and 475 lb-ft of torque. This engine careens the Charger from 0-60 mph in the low four-second range, beating both the Camaro and Mustang in power.

The fourth and final engine in the lineup is quickly forging a legend of its own, and it’s the supercharged 6.2-liter HEMI SRT Hellcat V8. This engine is only available on the Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat trim, and makes the Charger a force to be reckoned with; thanks to this engine, it’s the fastest sedan to ever be sold stock. Also, since this engine twists out a gargantuan 707 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque, it also makes the Charger the fastest and most powerful sedan ever created. If the Charger hits the low four-second range with the 5.7-liter, imagine what it can do with the 6.2-liter Hellcat under the hood?

A Plethora of Peak Performance Options

Performance is about more than just the engine. Sure, the horsepower and torque are a major part of it. But without a properly tuned suspension and transmission, a loss in power and efficiency is inevitable. Since performance is the main appeal of the 2016 Charger, Dodge made sure to cover every aspect of it.

The power required to make the Charger move this fast all depends on the transmission. Without the transmission, the power would never reach the wheels. Therefore, Dodge provides a state-of-the-art class-exclusive eight-speed TorqueFlite automatic transmission. This transmission is not only a big part of why the Charger can move so fast, but also helps with the engine’s power-to-efficiency ratios.

Dodge also made sure to offer four different suspension options that are precisely tuned to whatever performance demands the driver of the Charger wishes to meet.

The Five-Link Rear suspension is the standard suspension option, and combines coil springs, gas-charged monotone shock absorbers, a stabilizer bar, and an isolated suspension cradle. These elements all come together to ensure the charger will stay close to the ground even during aggressive maneuvers, and provide a firm grip with minimal noise and vibration. In laymen’s terms, it makes sure the Charger rides smoothly and effectively, with the least amount of bumps and noise possible.

The Performance suspension is the first of three upgradeable choices on the 2016 Dodge Charger, and takes what the Five-Link Rear suspension does to a whole new level. This option provides an even smoother ride, and is because of the inclusion of springs, sway bars, and Bilstein high-performance shock absorbers. It also provides sportier handling, since it works in tandem with the steering calibrations on the Charger.

The Sport suspension is a refined version of an independent short and long-arm front suspension. It has a higher upper “A” arm, with coil springs over the gas charged monotone shock absorbers, a stabilizer bar, and lateral and diagonal lower links with dual ball joint knuckles for enhanced handling.

The Adaptive Damping suspension is the only suspension on this list that isn’t an upgradeable option because it comes standard only on the Dodge Charger SRT 392 and SRT Hellcat. This Bilstein damping suspension allows the driver to select different suspension tuning for Auto, Sport, or Track performance. Now, instead of manually tuning the suspension for the street or track, it’s all done electronically.
