2017 Ram Truck Lineup Overview
In the last few years, truck sales have been on the rise and that’s not just a trend. Unlike any other type of vehicle, trucks are the easiest and best vehicles to transport things. Whether moving big tools for work, trailering boats or RVs, or all of the random and big things people get for their homes each year, trucks can do it all and one of the best truck brands is Ram.
The Ram lineup consists of light-duty trucks to very capable heavy-duty trucks, commercial trucks, and even vans. Each Ram model is available with a number of customizable options that make it easy for consumers and business owners to get a Ram truck that fits their needs and their budget.
Ram 1500 – Light Duty
The Ram 1500 is the most affordable and smallest truck model offered by Ram. For the 2017 model year, the Ram 1500 lineup includes more than 10 different trims and they range from the Tradesman (a perfect truck for work) to the fully loaded and luxurious Limited.
The Ram 1500 lineup includes three engine options. The base engine is a 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine that produces 305 horsepower and 269 lb-ft of torque. There is also the 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6 engine, which makes the Ram 1500 the only light-duty truck available with a diesel engine on the market. The third engine option is the 5.7-liter HEMI V8 engine and it is the most powerful. The 5.7L engine produces 395 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque and the 3.0L EcoDiesel produces 240 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque.
Like any truck, the towing capacity of the Ram 1500 varies due to engine, trim, drivetrain and axle ratio and the Ram 1500 can tow anywhere from 4,810 pounds to 10,620 pounds depending on its configuration.
Ram 2500 and 3500 – Heavy Duty
Next up from the Ram 1500 are Ram’s heavy duty models, the Ram 2500 and 3500. Both the models are similar when it comes to engines and mechanical features and the biggest difference is the 2500 is available with four engine options and the 3500 is available with a transmission option that isn’t available on the Ram 2500.
The 2500 is available with a 5.7-liter HEMI V8, a 5.7-liter HEMI V8 powered by natural gas, a heavy-duty 6.4-liter HEMI V8 engine and a 6.7-liter Cummins Turbo Diesel I6 engine. The 3500 is not available with the 5.7L natural gas engine, but it is available with the 5.7L HEMI V8 engine, a 6.4-liter HEMI V8 engine and a 6.7-liter Cummins Turbo diesel engine.
When equipped with the 6.7L Cummins Turbo diesel engine, the Ram 2500 is only available with a six-speed automatic transmission or a six-speed manual transmission, and the Ram 3500 is available with both of those transmissions in addition to the AISIN automatic transmission. The AISIN automatic transmission is what gives the Ram 3500 it’s best-in-class torque of 900 lb-ft of torque.
The Ram 3500 can tow up to 31,210 pounds and the 2500 up to 17,890 pounds.
For the 2017 model year, Ram makes three main types of commercial vehicles. The first one to discuss is the 3500, 4500 and 5500 Chassis Cab. The standard engine on the chassis cab models is a 6.4-liter HEMI V8, but they are also available with the 6.7-liter Cummins Turbo Diesel engine with a diesel exhaust brake system. When properly equipped, the Chassis Cab can tow up to 30,600 pounds (diesel).
Ram’s other two commercial vehicles are the Ram ProMaster and ProMaster City. Smaller than the Ram ProMaster, the ProMaster city is a capable and good-sized van that comes in two different models (a cargo van and a passenger wagon). The cargo van comes as either a Tradesman or SLT trim and the Wagon either as Wagon or Wagon SLT. The cargo van can hold up to 131.7 cubic feet of cargo. Low load floor height, 28 mpg on the highway, and a great price ($25,120) are just some of the many great features! The Wagon has some great features to like a starting price of $24,595, 101.7 cubic feet of cargo space, and seating up to five.
The ProMaster is available in four different model options including a cargo van, chassis cab, cutaway van, and window van. Each of these models has their own trim options and different features. The cargo van has up to 460 cubic feet of space, the window van can seat up to seven or nine depending on your preference, the chassis cab comes with a low frame height of 24.4 inches to allow access without a steps and fits attachments easily, and the cutaway jas 96-inch extended exterior mirrors and a heavy-duty rear suspension. Those are just some of the many highlights of this commercial vehicle.
