2018 Ram Models, Towing Capacities + Engine Options

Ram trucks come with some pretty awesome features, but without a doubt, the best feature on a Ram truck is its engine. The entire Ram lineup consists of six different engines, and they are available on different trims and have different purposes.

2018 Ram 1500

3.6-liter V6 Engine

The standard engine on the Ram 1500 lineup is the 3.6-liter V6 engine and it produces 305 horsepower and 269 lb-ft of torque. When the Ram 1500 is equipped with the 3.6L engine it has a maximum towing capacity of 7,600 pounds and a maximum payload capacity of 1,880 pounds.

3.0-liter EcoDiesel Engine

The Ram 1500 is the only light-duty truck available with a diesel engine. The 3.0-liter EcoDiesel engine is a great engine option because it provides a higher towing capacity than the 3.6L engine and it is also fuel efficient. The 3.0L EcoDiesel engine produces 240 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque and it gives the Ram 1500 a maximum towing capacity of 9,210 pounds and a maximum payload capacity of 1,600 pounds.

5.7-liter HEMI V8 Engine with MDS/ Fuel Saver Technology

The 5.7-liter HEMI V8 engine is the strongest engine option on the Ram 1500 lineup and it produces 395 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque. MDS standard for Multi-Displacement System (MDS) and it conserves fuel by turning off half (four) of the engine’s cylinders when the engine is cruising at a constant speed. The 5.7L engine has a maximum towing capacity of 10,620 pounds and a maximum payload capacity of 1,760 pounds.

2018 Ram 2500/ 3500

5.7L HEMI V8 Engine with VVT

The base engine on the Ram 2500 and 3500 is a 5.7L HEMI V8 engine with VVT, which stands for Variable Valve Timing. VVT helps improve engine efficiency by adjusting the opening and closing timing of intake and exhaust valves in each cylinder. When the 5.7L HEMI V8 engine is on the Ram 2500 and Ram 3500 it produces 383 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque. The 5.7L engine gives the Ram 3500 a maximum towing capacity of 13,910 pounds and a max payload of 4,080 pounds, and it provides the Ram 2500 with a max towing capacity of 13,880 pounds a a max payload capacity of 3,050 pounds.

6.4L HEMI V8 Engine

The strongest gas-powered engine on the Ram 2500 or Ram 3500 is the 6.4-liter HEMI V8 engine and it produces up to 410 horsepower and 429 lb-ft of torque. The 6.4L engine gives the Ram 3500 a max towing capacity of 16,480 pounds and a max payload capacity of 7,350 pounds and it provides the Ram 2500 a max towing capacity of 16,320 pounds and a max payload capacity of 3,890 pounds.

6.7L Cummins Turbo Diesel

The Ram 2500 and Ram 3500 are available with the 6.7L Cummins Turbo Diesel engine, and it can be paired to a 6-speed automatic or manual transmission, and the Ram 3500 is also available with an additional 6-speed automatic transmission.

When the Ram 2500 or Ram 3500 are paired to the basic automatic 6-speed transmission, the engine and transmission combination produces 370 horsepower and 800 lb-ft of torque and it gives the Ram 2500 a maximum towing capacity of 17,980 pounds (22,550 pounds on the Ram 3500) and a maximum payload of 3,160 pounds (6,720 pounds on the Ram 3500).

The 6-speed manual transmission and 6.7L Cummins Turbo Diesel engine produces 350 horsepower and 660 lb-ft of torque and provides the Ram 2500 with a maximum towing capacity of 16,890 (18,470 pounds on the Ram 3500) and a max payload of 3,060 pounds (6,640 pounds).

The special 6-speed automatic transmission that is available on the Ram 3500 increases the engines torque production to 930 lb-ft of torque and it provides a phenomenal towing capacity of up to 31,210 pounds.
