The future of the pickup market, one of the largest growing segments of the automotive industry, might have a new prime example of what a mid-size should be. Shoppers have increased their interest in the mid-size pickup, which is exactly what Jeep and parent company Fiat Chrysler Automobiles released this year with the 2020 Jeep Gladiator. The latest entry by Jeep is a convincingly robust, yet smaller size pickup compared to the most popular trucks in recent years. Is the newest trend for buyers interested in pickups a flash in the pan or will the Gladiator be one of the hallmarks of a new era of pickups?

What’s Old Is New Again

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles has gone down this route before, over thirty years earlier with their Dodge Dakota back in 1987.  The Dakota ran for nearly 25 years before ending its production by 2011. Now, FCA has their 2020 Jeep Gladiator debuting to wide-spread acclaim and sellout figures with its launch edition. FCA will surely continue to see this area as a target to expand upon if the Gladiator continues to be successful.  The mid-size pickup market was made popular by Dakota, being larger than the Ford Ranger, but smaller than the Ford F-150 and Chevrolet C/K trucks. Today, the Jeep Gladiator will compete against only a tiny bit of competition. The Honda Ridgeline, Chevrolet Colorado and Nissan Navara are hardly competition.

How the Jeep Gladiator Sets It’s Self Apart

Jeep is not new to the pickup market. Jeep has a solid reputation having sold pickups from 1947 through 1992, including similar Wrangler-based short-bed trucks. By the start of this decade, many within FCA and Jeep were ready to pounce on the pickup market in a big way. The Jeep Gladiator underwent deep evaluations and was studied heavily.

“A Jeep pickup truck has always been a top subject of conversation that we’ve been having with our customers. We’ve also been having that discussion inside the company among the planning teams, engineers and designers equally as long, if not longer,” said Scott Tallon, Jeep’s director of brand marketing.

Jeep Waited For the Right Moment

Jeep knew they had the Gladiator up its sleeve. The timing worked out so they would create the 2020 Jeep Gladiator after updating the Jeep Wrangler with a new generation. This move would be simple and more cost-effective as the Wrangler and Gladiator share the same platform for which they are built.  The evidence had long shown families opting for pickups as the family vehicle of choice thanks to their flexibility, enjoyability, infusion of technology, and luxury. Everything that owners of the all-new 2020 Jeep Gladiator will receive and embrace.

“Our own research showed thousands upon thousands of people moving away from traditional sedans as their everyday family vehicle The giant shift here is to S.U.V.s, but there has also been a mass acceptance of pickups as a family’s primary vehicle,” Tallon continued.

Why Opt For A Jeep Gladiator?

Still not convinced yet? Keep in mind, while the Gladiator is a mid-size, it is the best of the mid-size variety. The Gladiator offers 1,600 pounds of maximum payload, ahead of any vehicle in the segment. Best-in-class payload means more can be held with the Gladiator than any other pickup can offer. The Gladiator also has more horsepower at 285 and maximum towing at 7,650 pounds than the current Ford Ranger, Toyota Tacoma, and Nissan Frontier. Don’t worry about being able to do a job or not, as the Gladiator is quite impressively built.

In fact, the Gladiator is more than capable to travel nearly anywhere off-road as well. Skid plates, a five-link rear suspension, and large ground clearance assist to make the Gladiator just as capable of going off-road as any Wrangler out there. We love this vehicle and can’t wait to show it off! The 2020 Jeep Gladiator begins at just $34,545 MSRP (plus destination fee).
