The 2020 Ram 1500 is the first full-size pickup to officially earn the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety top safety pick and rating. Not only does the 2020 Ram 1500 earn the highest safety award from the IIHS, but the newest Ram 1500 will also bring the third-generation EcoDiesel engine. Improved safety and better fuel-economy will raise the value of the Ram 1500 to even greater heights. The customers that are looking for a pickup that can handle just about any job and offers solid fuel economy can now also feel completely secure in the 2020 Ram 1500.

The Details of the IIHS Top Safety Pick

Before the 2020 Ram 1500, there was not a single full-size pickup truck to ever win this top safety award.  The specific Ram truck that was tested and earned the recognition is the 2020 Ram 1500 Crew Cab model with optional equipment installed. To have come up with the rating, Ram tested with three frontal impact tests, a side impact, rear impact, a rollover test, and passenger-side small overlap front test. Ram won an “Advanced” in the frontal-crash avoidance test, but the headlight test was the hardest test for any vehicle to pass. Concerning the IIHS clearly states that the clarity and strength of the headlight output also matter in getting a perfect rating. Ram engineers worked on their optional adaptive LED projector headlights, including high-beam assist and automatic emergency braking technology to help the truck succeed in the IIHS testing. Even an “Acceptable” rating stops the vehicle from winning this award. These headlights are options only on the Laramie and Limited trims.

How Ram Prepared To Make the 2020 Ram 1500 Safer Than Ever

A large measure of what helped the Ram 1500 become as revered is the all-new structure Ram engineered for their pickups. The all-new Ram 1500 provided the ladder frame entirely with octagonal-section frame-rail extensions. The goal was to ensure the frame would crumple in a gradual, controlled manner. The frame-rail extensions are placed outward to better capture small-offset crash forces and move them through the sturdiest parts of the frame. Ram provided a Forward Collision Mitigation feature, complete with sensor-fusion technology that links camera capability with radar detection to predict the likelihood of a forward collision. A warning is set off and makes a signal to the driver to evade a crash. If the action taken is inadequate, then the system can utilize the brakes to avoid hitting anything in front.

Ram worked hard to include a dual, high-pressure and low-pressure exhaust gas recirculation system, revamped the pistons, reworked the combustion chamber geometry, and threw in a brake system vacuum pump with low friction blades. All of these changes will help the 2020 Ram 1500 have improved gas mileage and is just part of how Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA), the parent company of Ram, will see great success with the new 2020 Ram 1500.

“This recognition validates our unrelenting efforts to deliver more value for our customers. The new Ram 1500 has earned many accolades for its capability and design. It is immensely satisfying to have the IIHS recognize our truck for its compelling safety story,” said Reid Bigland, Head of the Ram brand.
