Engine Type

The Ram HD pickups come in a number of configurations just like their light-duty counterpart. For the 2023 3500 HD models, Ram offers buyers three engine options, two cab sizes, two truck bed lengths, and two drivetrain options. Standard under the hood of the 2023 Ram 3500 is the sturdy 6.4-liter HEMI V8 engine capable of generating 410 horsepower and 429 lb-ft of torque, all while paired to a six-speed automatic transmission. The top-tier engine is a powerful — and redesigned — 6.7-liter Cummins High Output Turbo Diesel engine that’s only available on the Ram 3500 model. The Turbo Diesel Cummins engine generates 400 horsepower and an unprecedented 1,000 lb-ft of torque. Additionally, Ram also offers a less potent variant of the Cummins engine that generates 370 horsepower and 850 lb-ft of torque, available for new 2023 Ram 3500 models.

Driving and Handling

Thanks to the revamped 6.7-liter Cummins Turbo Diesel engine, the 2023 Ram Heavy Duty reigns supreme as the most powerful and most capable pickup in the segment. The Ram 3500, when equipped with the Cummins Turbo Diesel engine, is capable of towing up to 35,100 pounds and offers a payload capacity of 7,680 pounds. The standard 6.4-liter HEMI V8 engine has a maximum towing capacity of 16,320 pounds. Engineering changes for the 2023 Ram HD lineup include new exhaust valves and springs, a new-and-improved cast iron cylinder head, lighter and stronger pistons, and new rocker arms. Additionally, four-wheel-drive is available on the 2023 Ram HD lineup. The new 2023 Ram 3500 HD features a BorgWarner part-time transfer case, class-exclusive Active-Level rear air suspension, and Frequency Response Damping shocks on all four corners.

Exterior Features

Just like its light-duty sibling, the Ram 1500, the 2023 Ram 3500 HD lineup offers buyers six different grille styles to choose from. There’s also a new front bumper that features larger openings to increase airflow into the turbo intercooler. Standard features include a locking tailgate, heated exterior mirrors (mirrors with turn signals are optional), front bumper sight shields, and automatic headlamps. Ram offers three different headlamp options for the 2023 lineup, including full LED projections complete with an Adaptive Front-lighting System (AFS), full LED reflectors, and a halogen option.

Interior Features

On the inside, the 2023 Ram 3500 offers a broader docking area, optional wireless charging, an assortment of storage compartments, a Ram Cargo Management system installed in the truck bed, a sliding cup holder tray, and a center armrest with deep storage space beneath to moonlight as a desk on-the-go. An active noise cancellation system, acoustic glass, and an acoustic windshield all work in tandem to reduce harsh cabin noise, while a new-and-improved climate system features 30 percent more airflow throughout the cabin, making the Ram HD a perfect fit for those seeking luxurious comfort. Optional upgrades for the interior include heated front and rear seats, ventilated front seats, leather upholstery, automatic climate control, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.

Entertainment

A six-speaker audio system is the standard on the 2023 Ram 3500 HD lineup, as is a 5-inch touchscreen display. Also standard is integrated voice command with Bluetooth, a complimentary one-year Sirius XM Radio subscription, a media hub, and the latest Uconnect infotainment system. There’s a massive 12-inch touchscreen display that’s shaking up the industry and is available as an optional upgrade, but an 8.4-inch touchscreen is the only upgrade available that includes navigation. Select trims can also upgrade to a 17-speaker Harman Kardon Premium audio system.

Safety Features and Warranty

Standard safety features for the 2023 Ram HD model include stability and traction control systems, a ParkView rear backup camera, an advanced multistage front airbag system, and a Sentry Key Theft Deterrent System. Advanced safety features are optional, with offerings such as Adaptive Cruise Control, a 360-degree surround-view camera, Forward Collision Warning with Stop, a cargo-view camera, and trailer reverse guideline with dynamic gridlines.
