Ever wondered which engine is the best in the business? Few choices would be better than what editors at WardsAuto have called one of Wards 10 Best Engines for 2019. The first vehicle to gain the Pentastar V6 engine with eTorque is the all-new 2019 Ram 1500 – it’s a fuel-saving powertrain capable of delivering 305 horsepower and 269 lb-ft of torque. There’s no sacrifice of horsepower, torque or capability, and the gas-saving technology helps to make the all-new 2019 Ram 1500 better than any Ram 1500 ever built. Let’s take a closer look as to what makes the new Pentastar so impressive.
Perks of the Pentastar Powertrain
The 2019 Ram 1500 pickup was not alone in gaining all the perks offered by the Pentastar V6, but it did help the latest 1500 hit a rating of 20 city and 25 highway MPG. The city mpg rating is an 18 percent increase, and the combined mpg rating of 22 MPG gained 10 percent from the prior model year. That’s quite an increase from one year to the next.
“The Pentastar V-6 engine with eTorque shows how electrifying components of conventional engines can create magic under the hood. The all-new 48-volt mild-hybrid eTorque system provides a dollop of electrical propulsion during launch and while shifting gears, creating seamless, buttery smooth power to the wheels and improved fuel economy. The power of the eTorque system also makes the Ram’s fuel-saving stop-start system work almost imperceptibly. It’s one of the best around,” said Drew Winter, senior content director at WardsAuto.
More About The eTorque System
What makes the eTorque mild-hybrid system so impressive is how the engine upgraded many functions of the Ram 1500. The eTorque system supersedes the old alternator on the engine with a belt-driven motor generator system that performs several purposes. The motor generator unit operates with a 48-volt battery pack to allow superior fuel performance, drivability, and power with swift, seamless stop-start purposes. The powertrain also gains energy recovery with brake regeneration used to support improvements in maximum towing capacity and overall payload; this makes the pickup an even more effective and stronger vehicle.
While the engine is on, the eTorque’s motor generator unit supplies a 48-volt current to a 430 watt-hour lithium-ion nickel manganese cobalt (NMC)-graphite battery, that includes a 3-kilowatt DC-to-DC converter to sustain the battery’s charge and convert 48 volts to 12 volts to keep Ram 1500 accessories operational, as well as supply a charge to the traditional 12-volt lead-acid battery that starts the engine.
The Pentastar Gives More Power and Effectiveness
The Pentastar V6 engine with eTorque keeps a conventional 12-volt starter motor, applied for cold starts and the first start of the day due to its higher effectiveness when dealing with severe temperatures. As the eTorque allows for harnessing energy during deceleration and braking to charge the battery pack, the eTorque also improves the driving experience by supplementing torque to the crankshaft during gear changes to minimize sound and vibration.
The latest Pentastar V6 engine comes with excellent technologies, such as wide-range variable valve-timing and two-step variable-valve lift that give the optimal blend of power and fuel economy based on the driver’s demand. A cooled exhaust gas recirculation operation allows for increased fuel performance and lower emissions, even with heavier loads, and best of all, the Pentastar V6 runs on regular 87-octane fuel to reduce the cost of ownership for drivers. Not too shabby!
“The versatility of our workhorse Pentastar V-6 engine family is unquestioned, with more than 9 million produced; and this latest Wards milestone represents the sixth time the 3.6-liter engine has been recognized with three different iterations. With the new eTorque mild-hybrid system, receiving the Wards 10 Best recognition validates our mission to provide customers optimal ownership value without sacrificing performance.” said Bob Lee, Head of Engine Powertrain and Electrified Propulsion Systems Engineering, FCA-North America.
