Prized 1963 Chrysler Turbine Sold
Let us take a quick moment to appreciate the classic appeal of the Chrysler brand in its 1963 Chrysler Turbine Car. Known for being one of only two ever built, a recent sale just took place involving one. The technological advancements of the fifties prompted some engineers to shoot for the stars in the following decade. The design showcases the era with its outer space and rocket-infused hues as the jet turbine product is shown. The turbine engines are known for offering fewer moving parts than the modern internal combustion engine. The turbine engine experiments were done by major brands including Toyota up until the 1980s.
Thirty years since then and going back over sixty years to when this vehicle was being designed, we are still impressed with the aesthetic of the vehicle. This particular Chrysler car turned in 130 horsepower with a massive 425 lb-ft of torque. Carrying that old man strength, this vehicle was and remains a prized vehicle. Exclusive and capable of moving up to 120 mph, the A831 turbine engine bursts with a quick 60,000 rpm. At the time, that was an incredible display of modern technology that still holds up somewhat today.
Just How Rare Is This Chrysler Classic?
In total, Chrysler only built 55 turbine engine cars. Five are currently in museums, two are owned by Chrysler and one is owned by former Tonight Show host and mega car enthusiast Jay Leno. The collection that sold this prized Chrysler Turbine Car, Hyman Ltd, priced the vehicle at $100,000. While the reason turbine engines didn’t take was due to its poor fuel consumption returns, the rare vehicle is a prized vehicle worthy to attract attention and comments.
