When Ram showed up at the 2019 Detriot Auto Show, not only did it win the 2019 North American Truck of the Year award for their 2019 Ram 1500 pickup, Ram also introduced some new faces. Much to the surprise of the crowd was the latest installments, two years in the making, of the best-in-segment, revamped Ram 2500 and 3500 heavy-duty pickups. The biggest and strongest pickups offered by Ram now bost a stunning 1,000 lb-ft of torque from their turbo-diesel powertrain. Spectators bare witness the striking, new 2500 Laramie Black edition as well as the monstrous Power Wagon model. The Power Wagon, which features front and rear locking axles, also includes a front detachable sway-bar to allow for unmatched off-roading abilities.
“Manufacturers like to come to the Detroit auto show and go big. Well, you don’t get much bigger than the Ram 2500 and 3500,” said Ram chief Reid Bigland on Ram’s big stage.
What To Expect With Ram 2500 and 3500
The 2500 model is a three-quarter ton and the new 3500 will be a one-ton heavy-duty with both of these trucks sharing similarities to the successful 2019 Ram 1500 pickup. The design will have six distinct trim levels inside and remarkable powertrains that show the commitment toward horsepower, torque and towing ability. Just how strong can drivers expect the latest heavy-duty Ram trucks to be? The Ram 3500 is rated at 35,100 pounds of maximum towing with a payload of 7,680 pounds.
About that 1,000 lb-ft of torque, it’s the first heavy-duty pickup to reach that number all due to the high-output Cummins turbo-diesel 6.7-Liter engine. With 400 horsepower and more torque than rivals Ford and Chevrolet offer in their HD trucks, there is nothing better than a Ram. The new Ram products are bigger with a 30 percent larger radiator with new bodyside moldings, mirrors and fender flares. Despite gains in size, the heavy-duty models are 143 pounds lighter. The new aluminum hood shaved off 20 pounds alone. With the hood and front changes, a new aerodynamic front helps the Ram trucks have 8 percent improvement in aerodynamic efficiency.
The Ram Mega Cab will contain a 12-way configurable console spacious enough to hold a 15-inch laptop or even up to 20 2-liter soda bottles, plus nine cubic feet of storage. Ram offers twice as much as the next closest competitor. The large 12-inch touchscreen featured in the Ram 1500 will be available in the 2500 and 3500 models as well; that’s a win for customers.
More On Ram Success
As crossovers and SUVs are dominating the market, the need for powerful trucks is still apparent as Ram sales were the highest in 2018 since 1993. The 2500 and 3500 models made up a third of Ram sales in the record 536,980 Ram sales in 2018. The Ram pickup trucks were the third best-selling vehicle of any segment in the United States last year, which is nothing to scoff at.
“These trucks enable a broader commercial vehicle range for a consumer who values getting all or most of their fleet work trucks from the same source,” said Stephanie Brinley, an analyst with IHS Markit.
