Head to Head: Ram Power Wagon v. 2017 Ford F-150 Raptor
This fall, two 2017 model year trucks built for power and off-roading will be released and they are fierce – the Ram Power Wagon and the Ford F-150 Raptor. Between the engines, towing capacities, and style, both vehicles will be the most aggressive looking and driving trucks on the market. Take a look at how they stack up against each other.
Engines
The 2017 Ram Power Wagon engine offers best-in-class 410 horsepower that is generated by its 6.4-liter HEMI V8 engine. The engine is coupled with a 6-speed automatic transmission that moves the vehicle’s power to the standard four-wheel drive system.
The Ford F-150 Raptor is powered by a 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine paired to a 10-speed automatic transmission that pushes out an estimated 365 horsepower to the truck’s two- or four-wheel drive system.
Towing Capabilities
With a bigger engine, the Ram Power Wagon offers more towing capacity than the Raptor. The Power Wagon has a maximum towing capacity of 10,030 pounds. The towing capacity for the 2017 Raptor is not available yet. However, the 2014 Ford F-150 Raptor has a towing capacity between 6,000 and 8,000 pounds depending on 4X2 or 4X4 drive.
Off-road tools
Intended to conquer the toughest off-road terrains, both of these trucks are equipped with off-roading systems and tools to make adventurous trips easier and safer.
The Ram Power Wagon has a 14.3-inch ground clearance and rides on 33-inch Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac tires perfect for any off-roading just about anywhere. Additional off-road features include hill descent control which allows for automatic braking over steep hills to prevent rolling back, Bilstein shocks for a more aggressive suspension, and a powerful torque of 429 lb-ft to grip and ride through any type of terrain.
The Ford F-150 Raptor rides on 17-inch wheels and BFGoodrich all-terrain tires for the most ideal off-road experience. In addition, a terrain-response system, and 3-inch FOX Racing Shox are added for the most comfortable and drivable off-road ride possible. The terrain-response system is used to respond and match driving settings based on the type of terrain that is being driven. The FOX Racing Shox allow for the Raptor to have a 13.0-inch front suspension and 13.9-inch rear suspension.
Style
The 2017 Ram Powerwagon is built off the Ram 2500 Heavy Duty 4×4 Crew Cab model, so it is a spacious four-door truck. The Ford Raptor is available as a 2-door or the new 4-door SuperCrew truck cab so buyers have options.
There is no doubt both of the trucks are aggressive and the most unique looking trucks in comparison to the other models available on both brands. It is hard to say based on design which is better, it really depends on the buyer preference. Infact, both trucks accomplish the stylistic goal in a similar way.
For example both of the trucks display their brand name big and proud on both the grille and tailgate of the trucks. In addition, both trucks are plastered both inside and out with the trim’s name and graphics.
