Why Performance Cars Need Higher Octane Gasoline
High-performance vehicles, like the Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat or the Dodge Challenger SRT Demon, produce insane amounts of power. The power comes from a number of engine parts that work together to make the engine move as fast as possible, and one engine component that contributes to the amount of power an engine produces is the fuel system.
The 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon is a good example. The Dodge Challenger SRT Demon produces up to 840-horsepower, which makes it the fastest and most powerful production car ever. However, 840 horsepower can only be achieved when the Challenger SRT is fueled up with a unleaded 100 octane fuel. Furthermore, the Challenger SRT Demon can only produce 808 horsepower (its base horsepower) when fueled up with Premium 91 octane fuel. So why do different octanes influence power?
Octane rating is strictly a measurement of a fuel’s combustibility. Fuel with a higher octane ratings signify how readily combustible the fuel is, or the more compression the fuel can withstand before igniting. Higher octane allows for a higher compression ratio, which improves efficiency, power output and overall reliability in high performance engines.
Dodge Demon Power with High Octane Fuel
So what kind of performance can you expect when the Challenger SRT Demon is filled up with high octane fuel? When the Challenger SRT Demon is filled up with 100 octane minimum fuel it can complete a quarter-mile in 9.65 seconds. In fact the vehicle is so fast, buyers have to sign a waiver when they purchase the 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon.
It’s not every day you’ll drive a vehicle with over 800 horsepower, but if you do drive any vehicle capable of hitting high performance marks, just know regular gasoline is not going to cut it. Treat high-performance vehicles as they should be kept, fed on premium (at the minimum) gasoline and properly maintained.
