Dodge To Enter Racing At Le Mans In 2022?

Some very different Dodge news was revealed at the recently held prototype meeting between IMSA, the ACO, and the WEC, Stellantis. This massive group is responsible for the enormous global automotive group that includes brands including Peugeot, Citroen, Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Maserati, Chrysler, Jeep, and Dodge — is analyzing a new American operation utilizing the underpinning of its 9X8 Hypercar in the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. This is not the typical production car made by Stellantis or the Dodge brand and should become a reality, as even some wild Dodge concepts are made eventually.
What Are the Chances?
RACER has said the innovative Peugeot LMH is being contemplated for either a part- or full-time IMSA campaign with Dodge badging. Provided the enthusiastic interest runs forward to complement Peugeot’s factory WEC LMH program that launches beginning in 2022. The Dodge version of the 9X8 would have its first chance to race at the opening of the 2023 WeatherTech Championship when the LMDh class debuts and LMH models are permitted to race beside the hybrid prototypes in a single unified class. This is still being worked out.
“While we only heard this confirmed a week ago it certainly has led to some very open discussion, not only about whether Peugeot might add races in the United States, but also about whether the ‘spine’ of this car might have opportunities with other brands in the Stellantis Group — there are no conclusions, but there are now open discussions,” Jean Marc Finot, Senior VP of Stellantis.
Looking at the rich history in GT competition, Dodge and Chrysler brand are no stranger to unique prototypes. Recently Stellantis ordered a factory LMP1 program that ran at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in the early 2000s. Peugeot Sport revealed the concept version of its 9×8 racer, set for competition in the FIA World Endurance Championship next year, last week. While this is a result of the perks from having a solid start to the year, as the Dodge brand did, that brought this possibility to the brand.
